Fired Up: Why are store hours so small?

Mark wrote this on in , . It has 17 comments.

Store hour signs are too small. Store owners try to make do with those open/closed signs, but how often does your favorite upscale restaurant even have one? How often do you find a post office with a neon pink sign telling you they're open? I thought not.

What's the problem?

Here at ZURB, we solve business problems through design and strategy. That includes all you brick and mortars out there: you have a fundamental problem that frustrates people over and over again. You have lost opportunity and no way to recoup.

See, here's the deal. If I'm driving by your store, I need to know if you're open. If you look closed, there's no way I'm wasting my time on the off chance you're closed. Tell me you're open, tell me you want my business. As business owner, you need to petition potential customers to take a chance and try your products. Your store hours, just like your products, help to lure customers in.

But what's a store to do?

Well, you could get one of those flashy neon signs and put it to good use. That solves the problem of whether people know you're open now, but not everyone uses them. And if everyone did, they're drown each other out.

Maybe the answer is larger store hours, hours so big they dwarf even your store's name and sign. Maybe the answer is just "looking open." You can't bet on customers remembering your hours. There are a lot of people out there with money ready to throw at you. How are you helping them to do that?

Get people in the door

Honestly, I'd love to see a store that has hours so big you can read them from two blocks away. It's important to do all you can to make potential customers walk through your door—how else will you get business?

So, what are you doing?

This is fantastic and so very true. I hate getting up out of the car only to find the lights are on but no one home and a tiny sign that says "Closed on Mondays".

I think unique signs get my attention as well. There is a bohemian thrift store by my office and they have a huge hand lettered sign. One side that says YEP and the other that say NOPE.

Chelle: love it. It's so easy for stores to say if they're open, and when they're open but so few of them seem concerned with getting that across. A nice big YEP and NOPE with some big, easy to remember hours would be perfect.

In that same vein, stores need to devote a little more thought to their actual hours. It's easier to represent 9 to 8, seven days a week than different hours for all different days – if a store is going to have weird hours they better have a clever way to tell me.

I'm more of a timer type guy. Why don't they just have count down timers for when they close and when they open.

Another problem with OPEN signs is that I often see stores leave them on when they're clearly closed (bright neon OPEN sign and no lights on). It's a modern day boy who cried wolf. For me, it's all about what's posted on the businesses website. No website? Good chance you won't get my business.

You know what I want? Google maps to give me store hours along with the address and phone number they already provide. If I need to know something is open I go straight to Google maps already - this would just save me another site to load.

The thing of it all is that businesses try so hard to get people in the door, but don't stop to think about the basics. What do people need to see or know to get into your store? Find the answer to that, and you'll be set.
