We turned 15 this year. It's not often businesses get a chance to live to 15 — over half of businesses shutter in less than four years. By year 10, 70% have disappeared.

For any new business getting started that's an intimidating statistic. In fact, the average age of an S&P 500 company is now just 15 years.

So it raises the question, why do businesses stay in business?
