Welcome to Clue

Clue is a tool that creates super fast memory tests on screenshots of webpages, then lets you see the results. It's perfect for capturing that all important first-impression of a website.

Why get a Clue?

What if your website isn't working like you think it is? Does it seem like nobody's lingering on the home page, or finding their way to the blog?

Get a Clue! Test out your pages and find out exactly what's sticking in people's minds.

Why 5½ seconds?

What's your attention span the first time you see a webpage? Test yourself: click on a page you've never visited before. Count to 5 in your head. Seems like a long time, doesn't it? If nothing grabbed you in that first 5½ seconds (or even the first 2 or 3 seconds!) you probably would have been out of there. The extra half-second might seem odd, but we've found it proves to be the most effective possible timespan.

Can I use Clue for anything other than webpages?

Sure! It's great for seeing what's memorable about your graphic designs, photos, artwork—almost any image you can think of that you can upload to the web. If you want to upload your own images and run different kind of tests, try out Clue's "Big Sister" Verify!

5 Ways Clue Can Help You:

Here are a five examples on how to make use of your Clue results:

  1. Find out how your site compares to a competitor's site. Test both and see how they compare!
  2. Do you sell products on your site? Make sure people can find the "Buy Now" button.
  3. If you're overwhelmed by "how does your site work?" emails, check that FAQ link—is it in the right place?
  4. Make sure your site represents your business: if you're in politics but the only thing people remember from your site is the monkey in the palm tree, maybe you're not giving the right impression.
  5. Get ideas for a redesign: get some hard data on what's working and what's not before you spend hours tinkering with your site.

How do I use Clue?

Just type in a URL, grab a screenshot, and Clue will create a memory test from it.

You can share the Clue link via email, or put it up on Twitter, Facebook, or another site. Then you can go to the results link at any time, and see what info Clue has been collecting for you.

Want to upload an image instead of capturing a URL? No problem!

  • Grab a screenshot.

Type in the webpage address and click the "Start Memory Test" button. Tip: If your page can't be captured for some reason, you'll be given the option to upload an image instead.

  • Share Your Test.

Copy the link to your test and drop it on Facebook, Twitter, your blog—or email it to your contacts for a really direct approach. Tip: Try one test with people who know you and your business, and one with complete strangers. It'll be really interesting to see how the results will differ!

  • Clue in to your results.

Access your results link to see what people remember about your page. Tip: Knowing people's first impressions can really help you understand what people are walking away with when they leave your site.

  • Add the "+" and share

Sharing a test's results is as easy as adding a "+" symbol to the end of your test URL. Tip: Share your test results with others and see if they agree with the final results.

Love having a Clue?
