Familiar as the
voice of the mind is to each, the highest merit we ascribe to Moses, Plato, and Milton is,
that they set at naught books and traditions, and spoke not what men but what they thought.
A man should learn to detect and watch that gleam of light which flashes across his mind from
within, more than the lustre of the firmament of bards and sages. Yet he dismisses without
notice his thought, because it is his.
-RWE, Self-reliance
Sometimes there is a fine line between critiquing and belittling. The difference is
ethics. It is never black or white, so
we are continually in a battle of over right and wrong. Having a strong point of view raises
peoples emotions. It makes people uncomfortable. Being critiqued can be frustrating, but it
helps us grow as individuals. Belittling on the other hand breaks us down and prevents growth.
How do you know when you have crossed the line? I'm not sure. If you are honest and your
intentions mean well that is a good place to start.
Express your own ideas and think about them. Present them. People will listen. Do not be afraid.
