As I was walking through my neighborhood I noticed that three large trees had been cut down.
For six months I walked by the huge house that was being built. The trees had been fenced in
to prevent damage -a city ordinance. It was a shock to see these great towers robbed of life.
They must have been close to 40 feet tall with a base 4 feet wide. Looking at the rings in
the trunk I would guess they were at least 50 years old.
Design should respect nature. Tearing down three beautiful old trees because they don't
fit in the landscaping is a travesty. History is a piece of design that is regularly ignored,
but one that can inspire people more than any other element. Challenge "newness" and look
beyond the surface.
